NASCAR Clarifies Rules After Christopher Bell Stumbles in Wrong Pit Box

NASCAR has made a minor tweak to its regulations regarding entering another team’s pit box during stops, but this change serves mainly as an explanation rather than a significant alteration.

Bell pulled out of his pit stall during Lap 108 for a tire change, but soon after, crew chief Adam Stevens noticed an issue with a loose wheel. Recognizing the problem promptly, Stevens instructed Bell to locate another team member’s pit area so that they could address and fix the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 vehicle effectively.

This decision was made because a detached wheel while racing could lead to penalties for the tire changer and jackman lasting up to two weeks.

After the race, Stevens mentioned that they had previously talked about such a situation and that he was aware it would result in a penalty only if they pitted outside their designated pit box.

Stevens informed journalists following the event, "This topic isn’t new; we've addressed it previously." He continued, "We have broached this subject with NASCAR before because it might stop a loose wheel from crossing the racetrack or causing an even worse scenario. The moment we recognized what transpired, we took immediate action."

NASCAR’s rules bulletin makes clear that a driver can only stop in another team’s pit stall to ‘correct a safety issue’ and will receive either a penalty for starting at the tail end of the field if under caution or a pass-through penalty if occurring under green flag.

In other words, this is akin to thinking outside the box, and NASCAR cites the following safety concerns as key differences:

  • Tighten the loose wheel bolts or lug nuts.
  • Remove a fuel can
  • Remove a wedge wrench
  • Take out the jack from beneath the car.

NASCAR also stated to teams that receiving service in another pit stall for competition adjustments may result in being penalized a lap or more. Again, this is to purely to allow teams the opportunity to correct a safety matter so something worse doesn’t happen at speed while on the race track.
