Lookman Seeks Exit as Atalanta Contemplates Transfer Move

Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman has informed Atalanta that he intends to depart the club at the conclusion of this season following the submission of an official transfer request. PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

As reported by Chroniclelive, the player who hails from London has his hopes pinned on Newcastle, Manchester United, or Juventus taking action following their reconnaissance efforts this campaign. This 27-year-old striker is eager about potentially returning to the Premier League, having formerly played for teams like Everton, Leicester City, and Fulham.

Newcastle and Manchester United have had initial discussions regarding Lookman, but Atalanta has established a transfer price of £50 million for him.

The choice for African Player of the Year follows a prominent and highly visible conflict with manager Gian Piero Gasperini due to a missed penalty. Although it appeared that they had resolved their differences, recent reports suggest that the player now desires a fresh start.

The Nigeria international has one year left on his deal with the Serie A side, which includes an option for the club to extend by an extra season, but the public fallout with Gasperini means he is likely to be sold this summer.

The conflict arose when Lookman failed to score from a penalty kick against Club Brugge. Following this incident, Gasperini openly criticized him, calling him one of the "worst penalty takers" he had ever encountered. Even with this strain, the forward remains part of Atalanta’s team; however, his exit appears highly likely.

The renowned Spanish club FC Barcelona has joined the competition to sign Lookman, according to reports from Fichajes. The Catalonian team is reportedly in talks with the player’s agents. It is understood that Head Coach Hansi Flick sees Lookman as a vital reinforcement for enhancing their offensive capabilities.

Lookman’s stock has risen considerably following his stellar 2023/24 campaign that saw him win the African Player of the Year award and claim a Europa League winners’ medal with Atalanta.

This campaign has significantly boosted his standing, with him netting 13 goals and contributing five assists across 23 matches in Serie A.

The market valuation estimates Lookman’s value at around €65 million (£54.2 million). Several Premier League teams have expressed strong interest. Additionally, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool are said to be keeping an eye on his circumstances, which extends the roster of possible buyers.

Although Lookman reportedly favors returning to England, Barcelona’s athletic initiative and the chance to compete in La Liga might be enticing for the multifaceted forward. The Spanish team presently tops the La Liga table and aims to strengthen its attacking lineup for the upcoming season.
